Creative Writing Workshop

The foundation’s first “More Than Words” Creative Writing Workshop held in partnership with Janus Education was held on Thursday, 5 June 2014. 57 children from four TCTF-supported organisations- Fei Yue Family Service Centre (Bukit Batok), Lakeside Family Services, New Life Community Services and PPIS Student Care Centre (Jurong), took part in the creative writing workshop, under the guidance of 15 mentors from Janus Education and TCTF scholar-volunteers.

During the 1-day workshop, the children explored the theme “Singapore 2114: My Dream, Our Future” through a series of discussion, watching related videos, drawing and writing. From teleportation to underwater cities, the imagination of the children knows no boundaries! To build their confidence in public speaking, they were also encouraged to present their ideas in front of their peers. Little tokens were given out to groups who exhibited team spirit and creativity.

Through this workshop, TCTF hopes this will inspire the little ones to not only improve their communication skills but also to think creatively. Contributions by our young friends will be compiled into a collection of Singapore stories by children for children, allowing them to blossom into young authors. We hope this experience has inspired them to continue writing creatively!

Project Cheer 2014

With the facilitation and support of TCTF, eight teams of over 160 ACJC students have brought cheer to 300 children and elderly beneficiaries in six charities over a period of two weeks. Their bespoke activities included painting sessions, science experiments, dance and sports that sparked inter-generational conversations and teamwork. To incorporate “Values in Action” after each Project Cheer, students were encouraged to self-reflect and internalise the experience and its learning points. The series ended with a closing tea session where student volunteers and charities reunited to share their Project Cheer journey with one another.

“You certainly brought cheer to the elders. We love you for loving them as your own”, said Anita Conriana, Centre Manager of St Luke’s Eldercare.

More Than Words Critic’s Club

On Saturday, 17 May 2014, Tan Chin Tuan Foundation (TCTF), in partnership with I Theatre, invited 20 students from CARE Singapore to a preview session of the play, Spot The Difference at the Drama Centre’s rehearsal space. Together with their parents, they watched the rehearsal and participated in an interactive critique session with the director and cast of Spot The Difference.

The Critic’s Club allowed our young critics to critique the play so that the director may improve on the piece before its actual run, based on their feedback. The club is initiated with the aim of exposing children to the arts at a tender age and boosting their self-confidence, knowing that their voices are heard- inputs by them would be included in a public performance.

On Wednesday, 21 May 2014, the children then visited the Black Box at the National Library to watch the actual performance. The children were captivated by the stunning performance, as seen from their active participation in answering questions from the cast. After the performance, a meet-and-greet session was organised for our guests where they got to take photos and interact with the cast. The children enjoyed themselves tremendously, showering the cast with high fives and discussing enthusiastically about their favourite characters!

A Journey to the World of Stamps!

During the September school holidays, on 10 and 12 September 2013, some 26 children from Thye Hua Kwan FSC @ Tanjong Pagar (THK FSC), ISCOS and Casa Raudha Women Home joined us in two days of exploration and learning about communication.

Day one of the two-part series brought the children together at THK FSC. Facilitated by our interns, volunteers and an invited artistic director, the children were introduced to the intriguing world of stamps through a series of exciting activities and challenging games. Fascinated with the compelling nature of stamps at the end of the day, the children fostered better communication and learnt a great deal about the importance of stamps.

Building from the buzz generated on day one, day two brought the children to the Singapore Philatelic Museum where they embarked on an engaging tour. After learning about the origins as well as the importance of stamps, the children had the opportunity to tap into their creativity to create a postcard and post it back home. At the end of the day, the children left with wide smiles and a passionate interest for the art of philately.

Dazzled by the talented American storytellers, Gene Tagaban & Len Cabral, the elderly and youth were drawn into a spellbinding world of fairy tales, folk tales, legends and stories that left them in awe. The storytellers inspired the audience to create their own stories in life and follow them with their hearts.
Concurrently, staff and volunteers from the various TCT-supported charities embarked on a journey to understand the power and peace of listening with the adept Clare Coburn. They developed their listening capacities as well as storytelling skills, leveraging on their learning and experiences.
