In collaboration with Playeum, the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation sponsored tickets to “A World Full of Stories” exhibition for 14 children from ISCOS on 15 March 2017. The Playeum exhibition fostered exploratory learning and creativity by encouraging the children to interact with the hands-on installations in the space.
After the exhibit, the children took part in a “Stories in a Bag” workshop where they contributed ideas with the use of assorted props from three bags to string together a story unique to them. They then crafted their own story conclusions through the use of illustrations.
The programme seeks to promote creative literacy, potentially inspiring the young children to be better equipped to express themselves confidently and creatively.
Read MoreOn 15 March 2017, more than 20 upper primary children from Lakeside Family Services Centre (Jurong East) filed into a training room for an afternoon of creative writing and storytelling. Excitement filled the air as TCTF-engaged arts practitioner, Roger Jenkins commenced his creative writing workshop – that falls under the auspices of TCTF’s More Than Words programme.
The children enthusiastically contributed the foundations of a story such as the setting and characters, while international-award-winning storyteller Jenkins demonstrated how to weave the elements together to form a riveting story. The children then attempted to craft their own piece – challenged by Jenkins to innovatively create new captivating stories.
Guided through the character creation process, the children learnt how to craft character traits, strength, weaknesses and even means of conflict resolution. The TCTF-sponsored workshop concluded with each group of children sharing the fruits of their labour – a diverse range of inventive stories.

Read MoreOver five months and 10 sessions, about 20 children from PPIS Student Care Centre (Bedok) learned life lessons and values through excerpts of well-known children’s book The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. With the partnership of ENCORE! The European Season in Singapore and the mentorship of The Theatre Factory, the children were introduced to beginners’ theatre skills such as props building, character development and soliloquies. The outcome was growth in self-confidence as each child strode purposefully on stage to recite their lines and re-enact key scenes. Often soft-spoken children broke out of their shells onstage for an 850-strong audience at the More Than Words Showcase, surprising even their parents.

Read MoreWith guidance and support from TCTF, 10 teams of over 170 Anglo-Chinese Junior College students engaged in Project Cheer 2016. This year’s theme ‘True Colours (缤纷心语)’ represents values that are embodied through colours. TCTF hopes that through Project Cheer, both students and beneficiaries would not only have an enjoyable and fulfilling time but also learn important values.
Over 10 Project Cheer sessions, the students connected close to 500 elderly and children beneficiaries from seven charities together. They planned and executed various activities ranging from kite-flying at Marina Barrage to terrarium workshops and even Popiah making sessions. These served as a platform for multi-generational interaction, allowing young and old to share experiences and interests with one another. This encompasses the essence of Project Cheer – bringing cheer through intergenerational bonding, empowering youths to give back to the community and encouraging partnerships between charities in the sector.
Dianah, a youth beneficiary from Beyond Social Services shared, “I learned that the elderly are not too old for anything, they can be very active during activities and games too! I can also learn a lot from their past experiences.”
