Ms Chew Gek Khim, Executive Chairman of The Straits Trading Company Ltd, works hard to build the foundation of the company and hopes that its 130-years history can be continued. The Straits Trading is currently working towards becoming a leader in Straits Real Estate (SRE).

The opening ceremony of the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation-Nanyang Technological University Advanced Leadership Development Workshop was held on 14 March in Singapore. The workshop was organised by the NTU Nanyang Centre for Public Administration with the support of the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation. TCTF awarded scholarships to students under two NTU master’s degree programmes. In 2017, 11 individuals from China’s government agencies and state-owned enterprises received the scholarship.

Ms Glenda Kee, a fourth-year student at the National University of Singapore, said her internships at the Ministry of Manpower in 2015 and at the Singapore Cancer Society last year have allowed her to view issues through different lenses. She also did an internship at the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation’s public relations department in 2013, where she was given “a lot of autonomy to plan and execute events”. She describes this stint as her most memorable experience. The internships have helped to bridge the gap between her field of study and her ambition to work either in the public service or at a VWO, she said.

With support from the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation, 11 Yale-NUS students stepped up their language learning efforts last summer. They did so by embarking on immersive programmes at language schools in various Chinese-speaking countries under the Chinese Language scholarship. Despite starting out with varying levels of language proficiencies, all of them had similar goals – to learn the Chinese language and further develop their appreciation for Chinese culture and history.

Prominent research leader and biomedical scientist Professor Barry Halliwell will help to steer biomedical research efforts in Singapore at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) from 1 January 2017.
Prof Halliwell, who is a Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, will succeed Professor Sir George Radda as Chairman of the Biomedical Research Council (BMRC). Prof Halliwell’s leadership appointment at A*STAR will run concurrent to his NUS responsibilities.
