Project WISH 2018: CARElderly (Circuit Road and Merpati Centre)

TCTF journeyed with CARElderly, which served seniors living in rental flats in Circuit Road and Merpati, throughout 2018. The multiple touchpoints included visits to the charity, to the seniors’ homes and culminated with a closing lunch to celebrate the Christmas festive season with their caregivers.

In March and October, TCTF embarked on a “Lifestyle Photos” project with 33 seniors from Circuit Road Centre and Merpati Centre. This was so that seniors could have portrait photos of themselves taken professionally by TCTF scholar from NAFA, Tan De Hao.

On 29 November, TCTF invited these seniors as well as friends and caregivers to a year-end gathering held in YMCA Singapore. The photos were printed, framed and gifted to the elderly. Together with interactive games, food and gift vouchers, volunteers from TCTF, SIT and YMCA spread the joy of giving during the Christmas festive season.

More Than Words Book Launch 2018: WE CAN – Create, Contribute, Care, Connect, Cherish

Our 5th edition of the More Than Words book: “WE CAN – Create, Contribute, Care, Connect, Cherish” was launched on Tuesday, 4 September at the National Library with 260 charity representatives, children and adults in attendance.

More Than Words is a TCTF signature programme which seeks to promote creative literacy, potentially inspiring and equipping children to think imaginatively and write better. The stories in the book were a culmination of almost eight months of creative materials collected from over 60 children beneficiaries from TCTF-supported charities, across three Student Care Centres (Lakeside Student Care Jurong East, PPIS Student Care Centre Jurong and Bedok).

In line with the theme of encouraging all to care for our environment and cherish the connections we have with one another, invited charity beneficiaries and partners participated in making shakers from recycled materials. They were also treated to heartwarming performances by the children themselves, which included a fashion show, poetry recital, song and dance items, and an interactive storytelling session by Mr Roger Jenkins from Story Connection.

With the five values emphasised in the 5th book of More Than Words, it is with hope that the children will create a greater future, contribute to society, care for one another, connect close relationships and cherish the opportunities throughout the years!

Excerpts of More Than Words 2018 Book “WE CAN – Create, Contribute, Care, Connect, Cherish” can be found HERE.

Project Cheer 2018

“With Cheer, We Bond”. This is the ethos that has held up the spirit of Project Cheer since its beginning. In this year’s edition of Project Cheer, we had 230 youths put their Values in Action by planning and facilitating 11 Project Cheer sessions and engaging 300 children and 400 elderly beneficiaries from 28 May to 14 June 2018.

Staying true to our objective of encouraging multi-generational bonding, the students put their heads and hearts forward to plan a day of activities designed to achieve fruitful interaction between children, youth and elderly. This process involved each team of students meeting the staff from both children and elderly charity centres, submitting a proposal, preparing for and executing the day of activities and undergoing several rounds of reflections. Through this process, the students truly learnt to be the heads, hands and legs of their own project sessions. The Tan Chin Tuan Foundation sincerely appreciates the hard work that all students, staff from charity centres and mentors from ACJC had put in to make Project Cheer 2018 a success!

“To know that many people came together for the sake of others is not the same as having fun with friends and family, where we often consider self-fulfilment. To know that people love other people, it honestly is such a miracle.” ACJC student participant, Claudia Chua

Field Trip to HortPark (In Partnership with ACTs of life)

In line with our More Than Words theme this year, “WE CAN – Create, Contribute, Care, Connect, Cherish” 30 lower primary children from PPIS Student Care Centre (Bedok) explored the herbs, flora and fauna at HortPark on 23 March 2018 to learn how they can contribute to the environment.

This excursion was organised in partnership with our long-time partner, ACTs of life, who re-enacted “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” through different activity stations along their walk in the gardening park. “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” created an immersive experience for the children as they visualised Peter Rabbit running in the garden.

In the second segment, the children imagined they were botanists and learnt about the important role of plants in the environment. Then, they planted seeds in a little cup and illustrated what their plants would look like if it were the last of its kind in the world. They even wrote about their imagined plants and how it would help the world’s environment.

Thank you ACTs of life for partnering with us to bring this field trip to life!
