Representatives from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and 20 tertiary institutions from China participated in the TCTF-NTU Advanced Leadership Development Forum last Friday. The forum, with the theme of “The Belt and Road Initiative and International Talents Nurturing”, was organised jointly by Nanyang Centre for Public Administration and the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation (TCTF). It aims to generate active discussion and research on the development of global innovative talents and cooperation amongst tertiary institutions in Singapore and China.
In 2017, ACJC in collaboration with Tan Chin Tuan Foundation held its 4th annual Project Cheer series which saw 12 classes of students design and organise activities for children and elderly beneficiaries from 24 TCTF-supported charities. As an exemplary platform for students to facilitate intergenerational bonding, Project Cheer was prominently featured in The Straits Times as part of a series on VIA in schools.
TCTF CEO Ms Yap Su-Yin and Manager Ms Angeline Kwong congratulated the new batch of TCTF scholarship recipients at SIT’s annual Recognition of Excellence (ROE) presentation on 1 November 2018. Held at SIT@Dover, the ROE celebrates the achievement of high-performing students. Mr Lewis Tan, second-year Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering (Land) student who received the Tan Sri (Dr) Tan Chin Tuan Scholarship is one of the first students from SIT to win a medal at the WorldSkills Singapore Competition. He said the scholarship has inspired him to achieve more than he ever thought he could.
The joy of seeing her patients get their lives back on track has kept principal assistant nurse at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), Madam Rahinah Ibrahim, 52, in nursing for half her life. “My team and I assist patients who have the potential to reintegrate back into society. It is very rewarding to be part of their recovery journey.” She won first prize at the annual Tan Chin Tuan Nursing Award held on 23 November; the highest accolade for enrolled nurses in Singapore. The awards were presented by Senior Minister of State for Law and Health Edwin Tong, Chairman of D S Lee Foundation Dr Della Lee, who founded the award and Deputy Chairman of Tan Chin Tuan Foundation Ms Chew Gek Khim.
Professor Cham Tao Soon was presented with the Distinguished Professional Engineer Award at a ceremony on Saturday, 17 November, to recognise his outstanding achievements in engineering, management, research and development and entrepreneurship as well as his services to the engineering profession. Minister of State for National Development and Manpower Mr Zaqy Mohamad who presented the award said that with many institutes of higher learning under Prof Cham’s belt, it was no wonder he is known as the “educator of the century.”
“With Cheer, We Bond” – This is the ethos of Project Cheer, an initiative by the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation in partnership with Anglo-Chinese Junior College which aims to encourage students to put their values in action and create positive experiences for the less privileged. This year, 230 students honed their project management and leadership skills as well as facilitated multi-generational bonding with 300 children and 400 elderly beneficiaries across 11 Project Cheer sessions from 28 May to 14 June.
