In August 2008, as part of the celebration of the Birth Centennial Year of its founder, Tan Sri (Dr) Tan Chin Tuan, the Foundation presented NTU with an endowed gift of $10 million, which was matched dollar-for-dollar by the Singapore government, to form a $20 million Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Fund. The Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Fund enabled the establishment of three key programmes.
On 22 June 2013, the third Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Forum explored the timely issue of food security and safety, particularly relevant in the Chinese context. These forums, jointly organised by TCTF and NTU, provide opportunities for friendly collaborations and continuing education for NTU’s Mayors’ Class alumni on topics that are most relevant to the development of China today.
Themed “Sustainability in the 21st Century: Strategies for Economic and Social Development”, the second Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Forum deliberated on sustainable development strategies from global and regional perspectives.
The inaugural Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Forum was held in Tianjin, China in October 2008. The second Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Forum was held on 29 October 2011 in Beijing, in conjunction with the Alumni Reunion for the graduates of NTU’s Master of Science in Managerial Economics and Master of Public Administration programmes. The alumni comprise senior leaders and policy makers from China’s public sector.
The Tan Chin Tuan Exchange Fellowship in Engineering was designed to offer opportunities for the younger academic staff to be exposed to international research environment and culture. This is to enhance their professional development and contributions to the university.
The TCT Exchange Fellowship has resulted in research collaborations with universities in the USA, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, China and India among others. The Tan Chin Tuan Exchange Fellows may also be called upon to be a speaker or panelist at the Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Forums in China.
