On 17 & 18 May 2019, over 150 students and staff from AWWA School, MINDS Perform, National Library Board kidsREAD Club and friends of the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation (TCTF) were treated to the interactive Young Children’s Concert by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO). This was part of TCTF’s partnership with SCO. DiSCOvering Treasures of Chinese Music—Winds in the Bamboo Grove, introduced the audience to various wind instruments such as Koudi and Guanzi through fun-filled performances strung together by an engaging storyline with the theme of treasure hunt led by SCO’s Resident Conductor, Mr Quek Ling Kiong. Each story was curated to share about the name, history and sounds made by various wind instruments in the orchestra. During the concert, the audience enjoyed a wide repertoire of music, which included an excerpt of “Musical: Adventure II”, “Toroto Suite” and “Hundreds of Birds Adoring a Phoenix”. The audience clapped along to the music and participated in mini-quizzes during the concert.
“Thank you very much for the invitation to the SCO Young Children’s Concert 2019. The children, the three teachers and I enjoyed ourselves very much – making a wind whistle each, having photographs taken, listening, learning and enjoying the music. It was such a precious opportunity for which we are very thankful and grateful.
Thank you for the warm welcome, and excellent care given to us while we were there, from the moment we arrived till we left. Fen Ni of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra deserved a special mention – she made us feel so important! The children, past and present participants of Jiemin Primary School kidsREAD Club, had an educational and enjoyable time. Thank you very much”.
